What is pressure?

Atmospheric pressure is also known as barometric pressure.

The earths gravitational pull on gases above the earth. In general, the further away from the earth the lower the weight of the air above, therefore lowering the pressure of the air at .

On average, a column of air one square centimetre in cross-section, measured from sea level to the top of the Earth's atmosphere, has a mass of about 1.03 kilograms and weight of about 10.1 newtons. That weight is a pressure of 10.1 N/cm² or 101 kN/m².

The standard atmosphere is a unit of pressure defined as 101325 Pa (1.01325 bar), equivalent to 760 mmHg (torr), 29.92 inHg and 14.696 psi.
